Chocolate fountains are new event craving

Not even Homer Simpson, in his ultimate cartoon fantasy world "The Land of Chocolate," could imagine the latest party food craze -- chocolate fountains.
Don't blame Homer. When he had that dream sequence during a 1991 episode of "The Simpsons," chocolate fountains didn't exist. Today, however, they're becoming main attractions at wedding receptions, business parties and fund-raising events.
All it takes is one look at the creamy, cascading cocoa confection . . .
At wedding receptions, the fountains have become a popular alternative to the groom's cake. Patty Dietzman of Waco, Texas, said that when her daughter married in May the fountain was all the buzz at the reception.
"There was a big crowd around it and they hovered around it the whole time," she said. "I know I spent my share of time next to it. And the kids were just mesmerized. It's quite a sight with all the food laid out around it."
The fountains consist of several tiers, with a heated base that keeps the chocolate melted. An auger carries the liquid lusciousness to the top tier, where it gently cascades down over the lower tiers in a solid sheet of sugary delight before returning to the base. Guests dip small foods such as fruit, pretzels, cream puffs, piroulines, caramels and marshmallows into the flowing chocolate.
From a distance, a chocolate fountain almost appears as a clay sculpture, but the smell is unmistakable.
Most vendors offer the option of milk, dark or white chocolate in their fountains. Milk chocolate is the most popular, and Dietzman said the chocolate at her daughter's reception tasted richer than any she had ever tried.
